How We Read Old Houses

We examine the decision behind the image: what is retained, what changes and what evidence supports the choice.

01 / Purpose

Conservation without nostalgia.

Moxbejellytornad.store is an independent informative website for owners of historic homes and readers interested in contemporary interiors. Our focus is the relationship between a building’s significance and the practical demands of present-day occupation.

We do not assume that preservation means freezing every room, or that modern living requires a stripped interior. We distinguish repair, alteration and interpretation because those actions have different consequences—even when the finished photographs appear similar.

Close observation often reveals more than a complete room view. Photographs illustrate the discussion, not an undocumented restoration claim.

An evidence trail, not a style prescription.

02 / METHOD

Read primary guidance

We refer readers to conservation bodies, official designation resources, recognised standards and specialist publications. References identify a route for further reading, not an endorsement of this website.

Separate principle from detail

A principle such as retaining sound fabric can be widely useful. A mortar mix, insulation build-up or structural intervention cannot responsibly be prescribed without investigating the building.

Name the limits

Our articles are editorial information. They are not surveys, consent advice, professional specifications or a substitute for qualified project advice. Requirements vary by place and designation.

References and corrections

Our core reading includes Historic England, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Historic Environment Scotland, ICOMOS and specialist building-conservation literature. Architectural precedents are used to sharpen questions about intervention, not to imply that a celebrated project supplies permission for a different site.

If a source has changed, a link has moved or a distinction needs correcting, please contact the editorial team with the page address, the passage concerned and a supporting reference where possible. We welcome specific corrections and clearly framed topic suggestions.
